Phew. My MacBook Pro just scrapes into the Big Sur compatibility list.
This time next year I suspect I’ll be choosing between an Apple silicon replacement - or going all in on iPad Pro for mobile computing.

@adders Now you’ve done it! I decided to check if mine would be upgradable, and it’s not 😔 I guess that’s it for my old MacBook Air. Catalina will be the last one, just hoping I can still use it for a couple extra years on that one, and that my required apps don’t stop supporting Catalina.
@maique It's impressive that we're still using 7 or 8 year old machines happily, though. A testament to the quality of the hardware.
@adders It is, yes. I never thought I’d be using this one for so long. The timing for replacement could be a little better, it comes at the worst possible time, but that’s on me, not the manufacturer 😂
@maique My MBP got a new battery and screen about 18 months ago, under an Apple replacement program, and I made the decision then to run it into the ground, rather than chase the new shiny thing.
Plus, I was nervous about the butterfly keyboards…
@adders Understand that very well. It’s been relaxing for me, not caring about the new ones. I’ve seen the Touch Bar debate, the keyboard mess, ... looking in from a distance, knowing this one was doing just fine, and I didn’t have to worry about getting a new one.
@adders I have a laptop from work, a desktop and an ipad privately. And the last few months have been really interesting in how I use them. Before the pandemic I just the laptop every single day for 6-10 hours, the desktop once a week and the ipad every day. Now when working from home, I've been using the desktop 6-10 hours a day, the ipad an hour or two each day and the laptop ... not at all (I just remembered that I should probably plug in the charger ... done). So it seem like I don't need a laptop for my personal use, it seem to be enough with a desktop and an ipad.
@jemostrom sometimes I don't like autocorrect: "Before the pandemic I used the"
