Hello community, who is using a point and shoot over a smart phone for photography and if you are, what are you using ? 📷
@Munish I use a Ricoh GR II a lot. There are newer versions. They take very nice photos and are very pocketable
@aeryn I am hearing a lot abut the Richo. I will need to check it out. How do you find the build and software?
@Munish it’s solid, well made. I’m also a Nikon user and I find them similar in the menus but a little quirky
@aeryn excellent. Thanks for the info. I hear that it’s really good as a point and shoot with the presets. Is that your thoughts too?
@Munish yeah it’s great as a point and shoot or if you want to get more creative you can go fully manual too
@Munish Ricoh GRIII and GRIIIx HDF. I’ve been using GRs since 2019 and carry one with me almost everywhere I go.
@Munish I had a GR IIIx but I switched to a GR IIIx HDF. Small, compact and very capable. Sometimes I feel like being adventurous and use an old micro four thirds camera (GM1 or GM5 or GX80 or GX8) with a compact lens.
Hmmm, now when I think about it, I don't take so many photos with my phone anymore.
@kimonostereo thanks for the advice, it seems GRs are popular. I have. Fuji XT30, which I am not using as much due to the bulk. Or is it because I just want a new camera..hmm @jemostrom @aeryn
@Munish By point and shoot, do you mean no fussing around with controls at all or do you mean simply a more portable small-sized camera?
@jemostrom right, I need to pick your brain. What’s the difference between the GR iii x hdf vs the GR iii HDf ? Also, is it worth the upgrade from the GR iii?
@Munish the hdf stands for ‘highlight diffusion filter’ and makes lights and highlights pop in photos. The difference between those two cameras is the iii is a 28mm equivalent focal length and the iiix is a 40mm equivalent focal length so a bit more zoomed in.
@alpower ahhh so down to preference on the shooting style between those two models. Thanks so much
@Munish A smallish mirror-less camera ought to do the trick. You can always shoot with the P mode most of the time but have the option to crank it up if you feel like it. Weight was the biggest factor for me when I was shopping for one. After waiting forever for Fuji X100V, I went with the Nikon z fc. But it's still not more convenient than just shooting with your phone.
@Munish GRIII and GRIIIx are essentially the exact same camera with different focal lengths. GRIII has the “classic” 28mm (wider, more context) and the GRIIIx is 40mm (closer, more subject/detail focused). The HDF versions remove the ND (neutral density) filter add a special Highlight Diffusion Filter that can be activated to make the photos a bit softer feel in certain lighting conditions.
My advice is if you’ve never handled a Ricoh GR before, try to find a place that has one before you purchase so you can see if it works for your needs.
@Munish GR III has a lens corresponding to 28mm full frame, while the GR IIIx has a lens equal to 40mm. IIIx to IIIx HDF ... that remains to be seen, I've only had it for a week and I haven't really tried out the HDF feature yet.
@Munish Nope. In fact, might go the opposite way and even sell the one I got and go all in with the iPhone with some accessories. The quality is going to merge at some point. It's mostly now about the feel and mindfulness aspect.
@Munish It's pretty nice. However, I haven't really had the reason to try out the HDF feature much (I took some photos with it enabled but they were bad - for other reasons than HDF - so I deleted them, but it looked like the HDF thing could be nice if used right). Anyway, here are a few photos from it flickr.com/photos/je... flickr.com/photos/je... flickr.com/photos/je... and flickr.com/photos/je...
@jemostrom thanks so much and for sharing. Look great. Let me know if the HDF gets any better ?
@Munish Since I don't really remember, I'm going to say that they are edited. That said, when taking B&W photos I usually take RAW+JPG, then I edit the RAW in lightroom and delete the JPG version (don't ask, that's just the way I do it 🤷🏻). Color images are very interesting ... because they come out perfect for me 95% of the time, and I am usually quite happy with the results when I import the RAW files into LR.
@jemostrom thanks, which one of the preset black and white setting is your preference? I will let you know how I get on when mine arrive. I have been told to check out the Leica dlux 8 🤔
@Munish Yes, personally I like to use new stuff for a while (1-2 years), and the read through the manual and check various tutorials. I usually find a lot of new stuff then that's useful for me + I know how I use it so it's easier to customize.
@Munish I’m still shooting with my old Fuji XE-2 and some used lenses. (I don’t have the budget for thousand-dollar cameras.) Even though it’s relatively small, the size does prevent me from taking it as many places as I’d like but the photo quality still makes me very happy when I do.
@gregmoore interesting people still recommend that Fuji as a very good camera. It is a shame when the size of the setup prevents usage.
@Munish I have just traded a couple of my little used zoom lenses for a Nikon Z30 to be my walking around camera. It is very lightweight and I have it paired with the Nikkor Z 26mm pancake lens. No regrets coming from full frame Nikon Z 6ii which I still own and use.
@Ozzie48 if I remember correctly, the z30 has no EVF and no IBIS, what's your opinion of these differences?
@jemostrom I can deal with omissions. I am using the camera with a wide angle light prime which helps with getting sharp photos without ibis. I’m getting used to composing with lcd display and it is mainly problematic in bright sunlight but it helps that camera focus show green square on focus .
@Munish It's very difficult to compete with "it's in your pocket right now." I absolutely love my old Fuji camera but I can't really keep it on me without a bag.
@Munish You previously asked about how photos from my GR IIIx HDF compares to a regular GR IIIx, here is an example. This first photo is with the HDF filter turned off
And here is the same scene with HDF filter turned on
