I am planning on to getting my first Apple Watch. While I am a long term optimist about wearable health tech, I am not sure I will like it as a watch. What should I do? Get the cheap one to minimize the risk of disappointment? Or try to get a bit more expensive one that looks nicer?

@tkoola I can only tell you what happened to me. I've been living a large part my life without a wrist watch, never found it worth the trouble ... only exception has been when I've been traveling abroad. When Apple (I'm very much an Apple-person) released v3 of the Watch, I decided to take a chance and bought it. Since then, Oct 2016, I have had it on my wrist every day except 2 ... I'm probably the most surprised person about this fact. I find it quite useful, I of course use it to tell the time, but even more as health thing and as an extension for my iPhone. I always have my phone in silent mode, and I've set up notifications on my Watch to just show me certain notifications like messages, important news, calendar items, etc. This mean that I don't always need to have my phone on me. Also, the watch is on silent mode so when something of interest happens it only vibrates on my wrist and others will not be aware that I got some kind of notification.

Occasionally, I've also used it for phone calls when I haven't got the phone with me. For me, it has become one of the items that if it would break I would just get into the car, drive to our local apple-stuff shop and buy a new one. (that said, my Watch is old enough to not have all the new features so I might buy a new one next time a new version is released)

@jemostrom I think this is a viable scenario for me as well. What I would like it to be: a health device and a way to cut down phone time. Originally I was in "not gonna buy a watch that doesn't show you time all the time" camp but that excuse went away few years back. Let's see how it goes

@tkoola My own experience with things like that is that whenever I try to get the cheaper one to limit how much I'll be out if I don't like it, I actually drastically increase my risk of disappointment. I'm not sure about the Apple Watch specifically, but in general my advice would be to get the one you think you'll like the best even if it's a bit more expensive, because long-term you're more likely to be happy with your decision that way.

@jayeless yes, I've made this mistake twice with home gym equipment. Either get surely good (and expensive) enough things or not at all. Cheap, unsatisfactory bikes etc. remain unused

@tkoola If you get an Apple Watch, skip the 3 and make the SE your low end choice. The SE only costs a bit more and is vastly better.

@mcg I think I will even skip SE and go with 7. That always-on screen is a must for me

@tkoola Hah. Yeah definitely the best choice. Just wanted to warn about the 3. Apple should have dropped it last year.

@tkoola My experience is a lot like that of @jemostrom . I'd say get a Series 7, but unless you like throwing money around, get one of the cheaper ones — what's inside is the same. Then in a year or two upgrade to a newer version. 😀 I'm trying to order a S7 right now and while I've configured what I want, the Add to Bag button is disabled . 😒 Currently I wear a S5.

@Miraz try adding email and phone. I got stuck at the same spot in the Apple Store app

@tkoola After much messing about trying things what finally worked was to select a watch I don't want. Clearly the one I do want, and will wait for, just isn't available to order right now. 😒

@tkoola I tried again after 1 pm (maybe orders opened at 1 pm not am as I believed). The band I wanted was no longer listed, but I've succeeded with my order at last!
