🐘 I just joined Mastodon today and I have no idea what I’m doing. It looks similar to Twitter/Bluesky so the learning curve can’t be that bad, right?

Are there any tips, tricks and/or warnings anyone wants to send my way?

@jedda Mastodon and the Fediverse in general is an .... interesting place. There are quite a bunch of kind souls over there as well, and it's probably the most "open" kind of social network available to date, which comes with some ... caveats, as always. 🙈

@z428 thanks for your insight! I'm hoping those kind souls find me, and the caveats stay away lol. For now, I'm just having fun exploring to see where it takes me.

@jedda Which platforms do you use?

It might just be me (a big software nerd), but one of my favourite things about Mastodon, is the fantastic selections of clients. And you can easily just log into a bunch, and find your favourite!

I'm also asking, because one of the better ones, Mammoth, has a great on-boarding, that gives you lots of help finding people!

@jedda Ice Cubes is great! Free, tons of features, looks nice, and very active development.

@jedda Ah, no sorry! I was thinking of iOS/Android, PC/Mac etc. I don't know Android clients well, and didn't want to recommend apps you can't use. =)

@Havn ah this makes so much more sense. I'm on an iOS/Mac. Just read your post and it's super helpful! I'm going to have to play around with some of your recommendations and see where I land. I didn't realize there were this many options so it's great to see. Thank you!

@Havn thanks! i have both ice cubes and mammoth installed right now... leaning towards ice cubes though.

@jedda Yeah, I mostly like to use that better as well. (Even though Mammoth is still better than most social media apps!)

Do you find any use of the on-boarding/custom feeds in Mammoth? (Like the one on photography.) I can imagine dropping in there from time to time, both to read, comment and finding people to follow, could be worthwhile.

That's the only thing I prefer in Mammoth over Ice Cubes, I think. (Plus, and please don't read this next sentence, that I can't get over the jittery scrolling in IC. 🙊)

@Havn yes! I have found the custom feeds helpful so when I've run out of things to read on Ice Cubes, I switch over which is nice.

Wow, I did not notice the jittering until you mentioned it (on your blog and here) but now I am hyper aware 😭 No worries though, I'm trying to just look past it now haha
