@joshsullivan That should keep you going. Do you use it alongside The Brain etc.? Or is it more like a Day One replacement?

@canion I'm using it alongside TheBrain currently. Standard Notes has become my snippet and notes repository for work notes. I tried using TheBrain for this, but I was having an issue with the organization in TheBrain. Since most of my snippet notes are one line PowerShell commands, but there are about 300 of them which belong to one parent in TheBrain, which became unwieldy in the desktop version and completely unusable in the mobile version. SN allows for tags, and with the Folder extension (tag hierarchy), it's easy to have 300 notes under one tag.

@joshsullivan Sounds intriguing. I don’t think I personally have a direct use for Standard Notes, but now I’m curious about it anyway. I have too many note taking options already! I’m addicted!

@canion Haha, me too! I've cut it down to TheBrain, Standard Notes, one DEVONthink database, and Dynalist, but I'm trying to cut down to just TheBrain and Standard Notes. Although, I would keep Dynalist if I could get the 50% off deal I got last year during the holidays.

I also would put out there, although Standard Notes doesn't have all the features of Day One, its core mission is security and I trust it completely. I have no faith in Day One keeping my data secure. Or even keeping my data after some of the horror stories I've read online of losing data and photos.

@joshsullivan I've been using Day One for years, but I'm always a little bit frightened that my data will either be lost or revealed. I don't store anything in it that would be damaging if released and I do make regular PDF backups. I bought the DevonThink 3 upgrade so I'm trying to use that as much as possible to get my money's worth.

@vasta Day One offers end to end encryption so i don't worry too much about it. I also export each month just to be safe.

@vasta I’m sticking with Day One for memories because the UX is so well-tuned for exactly that purpose.

@vasta I never did the direct Day One to Standard Notes migration, I had a couple apps in between, but IIRC you can export to plain text from Day One, then Standard Notes has a conversion tool that converts Plain Text to the Standard Notes import format, then you log into your account and click import and it imports everything.

As for workflow, Standard Notes has apps on every platform (web client, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS), it's an Electron app, so it's easy to add entries to it. One drawback for some people is it has no way of using a URL scheme for getting data in, due to how the encryption is set up. I personally like that the dev, Mo, hasn't compromised on security in the name of convenience, but to each their own.

@joshsullivan I was thinking no URL scheme was going to be a deal breaker for me. After thinking about it though, the only URL scheme I use for a notes app is tracking monetary tips for my work expense reports, and I don’t really need a URL scheme for that.

@joshsullivan I’m really considering taking advantage of this deal as well

@vasta one note: E2E doesn’t work with IFTTT/zapier, so you have to set up an “import” journal for those and then move them into your E2E journal
