Goodreads is sort of the de facto standard, but recently it reminds me of the TV shows on “Idiocracy”. I’m happy to have started testing Literal.club as a replacement. Not sure yet that it’ll work, but at least its layout doesn’t give me a headache.

@jack What an absolute eyesore, which it would be even with just one ad for the exact same car in all three.
@jack GR: terrible. Thanks for mentioning literal.club, tho, I've just put myself on the waitlist! :)
I'm probably repeating myself, but I can only recommend setting up nextdns.io to make the web a saner place again. Way less ads, way less tracking. (For example, "my" Goodreads background is clean.) That doesn't fix the underlying issue of surveillance capitalism but at least my house and its devices get some respite.
@czottmann NextDNS yes! I replaced a Pi running Pi-Hole last year with NextDNS and it's been great. I sometimes turn it off because it blocks unsubscribe links, etc. I loaded that goodreads page and was immediately reminded to turn it back on :)
@jack That's a good reminder. So many good reminders! SO MANY GOOD HUGE BLINKING REMINDERS EVERYWHERE 😅
@czottmann @jack If you’re on Mac/iOS I can highly recommend using 1Blocker as well, which gives you an additional layer of content blocking in Safari. This combination is exactly what I use with great results. 1Blocker also is much better at removing white space from things that get blocked, as well as offering more customization when it comes to blocking specific page elements.
@pimoore I'm more of a Firefox person myself but I agree that a combo of both DNS and local filtering is great, both at home and on my phone. 💯
Also, I have no idea how non-tech people cope with all that crap. 😕
@czottmann Me neither, if I had to browse the internet that way I would rage quit on the spot.
