Cal Newport says that there’s no concern that Tesla’s FSD will “go rogue” in the sense of disobeying traffic laws.

All I have to say is that he may not be as familiar with the state of AV technology in general, and Tesla in particular, as he is with other topics.

@jatowler I assume this relates to his Zitron appearance? Not obeying traffic laws is not quite the same as going rogue - which I think was the point he was driving to?

@JohnPhilpin That’s Newport’s own podcast; the blog version is here, where he writes,

> no Tesla has ever decided to start ignoring traffic laws to pursue its own goals

I understand the point he wants to make about “rogue” versus “fatally flawed,” but Tesla is a bad example of “responsible AI.”

@JohnPhilpin The framing of “not obeying traffic laws” was Newport’s from the podcast:

> no one worries that their Tesla will spontaneously decide to start ignoring traffic laws and obey laws that it invented himself.

His bigger point is good, but savvy observers do worry about FSD.

@jatowler so Cal is clearly decided on that one as one of his repeatable talking points😉

And when it comes to all and any thoughts on the muskrat’s endeavours … I tend to view through a more specific lens.
