I’ve been considering making a move from 1Password to a Bitwarden Enterprise subscription. Having been a 1P user for a very long time, I’m hesitant about making a change, but would like to save the $18 a year. Someone talk me off the ledge – one way or the other…

@jim Fellow long time 1PW user here. Using 1PW with Safari is a bit flaky, but I’m so invested in 1PW that I’m nervous about switching to something else. That said, since I’m a Proton Mail user, I get the Proton Pass App for free. I’ve installed the Safari extension, and so far it’s working well. Just baby-stepping into the process. Proton Pass will have to prove itself over a few months before I even consider changing! 1PW is just such a solid manager, but I am very frustrated with its Safari extension. Let us know what you do, Jim.

@jim I just started migrating my family to 1password this week, but I get it for free through my employer so that makes it a bit of a no-brainer. If that weren’t the case, I would go with bitwarden. I’m liking 1password a lot so far, my one annoyance is that they haven’t yet implemented credential import/export via CXP (despite being very vocal about having co-authored it) while both Apple and bitwarden already have.

@jim Unless you’re unhappy with 1P, $18 a year doesn’t seem like enough savings to be worth the hassle. I’m considering heading to Apple Passwords cause 1P is getting unreliable for me. Free and hopefully more solid.

@jarrod I use both 1PW and Apple Passwords (I keep both updated and current) and using Safari, Apple Passwords is much better. I haven’t had any issues at all.

@jarrod I’ve been using Apple Passwords since it first dropped and it’s been fantastic. Solid app. Highly recommended. Moved from BitWarden which I’d used for years and started getting crappy.

@jim I would recommend Proton Pass, at least you should try it out. Also switched away from 1Password (a while ago) to Apple Passwords, but after the Paris disaster I defintely will not continue with all eggs in one basket. Decided to switch to Proton Pass, as the UX is awesome and also better pricing compared to 1P.

@jarrod Apple Passwords generally been great: except for things it doesn’t track, which 1P does - software licenses, ssh keys, etc.

@jim I was with 1Password at the beginning and stuck with them for many years. I left and came back. They felt like the DNA of my computer setup. However, since Apple have introduced their Password app, I have left 1P. It’s probably been a couple of years now. Initially that felt like a clunky move - non-password items like Software licenses (a dying breed in a world of subscriptions) I moved to Apple Notes, but now an app that has languished on my devices is being used more.

I am happy with Apple Password. It’s a little cumbersome if I am using a browser other than Safari, but it does work, and I am happy with that setup.

Leaving 1P felt uncomfortable after so long with it, and I’ve found a life without it!

@jim Moved to Bitwarden free after LastPass crumbled. Has worked perfectly for months. Apple Passwords doesn’t work for Win or Linux and the browser plugin is incredibly annoying so that’s a dealbreaker.

Thanks for the different perspectives @cliff538, @unravioli, @jarrod, @tylerknowsnothing, @fischr, @mako, @crossingthethreshold, @az, and @dhry. I really appreciate you taking the time to share them.

The reason I’m looking at Bitwarden is primarily cost, as well as browser/platform compatibility.

Apple Passwords is out because it seems less compatible with browsers apart from Safari. I’m sure I could make it work, but I’ve just not been impressed by it. Maybe one day…

Proton Pass looks good, but with it coming in at pretty much the same price point as 1P, I don’t see it worth the extra effort of jumping ship just yet. But if 1P were to get worse, I just might.

Overall, I’ve not had the browser compatibility issues others seem to have with 1P. When I use Safari, it works pretty well, though clicks seem not to always register.

I guess it comes down to whether saving $1.50/month is worth the migration headache. Probably not at this point.

@jim there are significantly easier ways for me to save $18 a year than changing core, security software.

@jim not sure about Bitwarden, but I quit 1Password a while ago for Strongbox Pro. Not only is it much cheaper with a one time payment, but it also doesn’t phone my passwords to the US. I have set it up so it simply syncs to my server hosted in Germany. A bit technical but works very well.

@jim I like both services, but 1Password has way more functionality for me. They haven’t had any security or privacy issues, and their apps are pretty bulletproof working better than the various other password services I tried consistently. I think the $18 a year is more than worth it.

@jim they all gonna have their quirks. i didn’t realize they so close in price. totally not worth moving but a little bit of experimenting never hurts.

@timapple I’ve not been convinced yet that a move is worth it, so for now I plan to stick to 1P. It’s too ingrained in my workflow. None of them will ever be perfect.

@llbbl I’ve come to the conclusion a move is not worth the headache yet. I may take another look at Strongbox Pro at @AlexKucera‘s recommendation, but for now, I’m sticking with 1P.
