Listening to this week’s @atpfm and I really wished I could call in to participate in the convo.

The Google Home Hub is very good, and I’ve been a happy customer for years. It doesn’t advertise anything at all to me and it does that thing Gurman suggested about the Apple one that will show a large UI when far away, but a more intractable one when you approach.

I’ve also allowed it to recognize me and whenever I look at it directly it will go into listening mode and I can just ask it to do something without saying “hey Google.” It does a great job of avoiding false positives as well.

This thing doesn’t integrate with basically anything else in my digital life, but having a screen for photos, home control, and timers alone is fantastic. It’s also nice to be able to ask it questions and get text and images on the screen as well in some cases.

@matt The ability to just say "stop" when a timer going off is a huge benefit as well.

Also ditto, as I wrote in my review, the pixels per degree of the Vision Pro display is about equal to using a 27” 1080p monitor at a desk. That’s exceptional for a VR headset at any price, but it’s not as crisp as any remotely modern computer monitor.

If you dig it, fantastic! It’s simply not as crisp though.

@matt 27-inch 1080p is what everyone uses where I work.

@matt at the peak of my Apple Vision Pro high I thought about how any existing HomePod in my home should be able to do this while wearing AVP.

AVP knows HomePod and knows I’m looking at it. The Siri sphere could appear hovering over it and “look back at you”. But the cost is wearing a face computer all the time.

So yea… maybe just install enough home cameras to tell where you are looking instead. I like the idea a single camera could allow contextual interactions with multiple products.

@nwd That’s all well and good, but those are like $99 monitors these days. If you spend $200 or more, you’re basically always getting at least 1440p and 4K monitors are in the $300+ range now as well.

I’m just saying a $3,500 headset matching the fidelity of a $100 display isn’t super impressive.

@jarrod No, this is the fixed device one, so I can’t take it off.

Truthfully, I kinda like the fixed nature of it. I don’t want to need to set a timer or ask a question only to remember that I was using the tablet in the office and I need to go get it.
