🔗 Senator Elizabeth Warren claims TurboTax ‘relentlessly’ upsells customers in letter to FTC // Emma Roth // theverge.com

…found that the company attempted to upsell the customer eight times during the tax filing process.

I got gotten by TurboTax again this year. Their “guide” said I’d need premium live help service because I bought a house. I didn’t use any live help features, the house purchase barely came up, and I was still charged over $300 to file. I’d already put in all the time and effort, so I paid it to be done, but it stung. I’ll be looking at other options earlier next year.

@jarrod I’m so happy I don’t have to deal with this. For my simple needs, the government online registration fills out all the things by default, and I just have to confirm. One gift to a charity wasn’t included, but that was because I didn’t use my SSN upon giving, and another wasn’t listed among the organisations.

@odd That’s the thing, I’m never sure if my needs are “simple” enough to use the free stuff. And now I’m distrustful of any paid service. 🫤

@jarrod For your list of options to look into next year: My father-in-law suggested I use EZTaxReturn.com five years ago or so, and I’ve had a great experience with them. Really easy to use and very affordable. I paid $55 this year for a “complex” filing (married-filing-separately on my state return for a better refund) and a small optional upcharge for insurance to cover if I needed to make any changes to my filing.
