Heads up to Micro.blog users: For a while, I resisted @-mentions because I didn’t want those posts to end up on my blog/RSS feed. I knew replies to other posts wouldn’t, but I thought original posts would. But MB is smart and if you start a post with an @-mention, it won’t be a regular blog post. 🧵

And it turns out this works even if you exceed the 300-character truncation limit of the timeline. My 354-character post did not end up on my blog even though it wasn’t truly a reply to anything, and it wasn’t truncated on the timeline either because the truncation rules are different for mentions.

One more tip: If you’re making a reply to one of your own posts to make a “thread”, you can delete the @-mention to your own username and it’ll still works. Mentioning yourself looks a little goofy, but you don’t need that bit there. (Notice it’s missing from this reply.)

@jarrod But I left it on this one. Options! âš–

And replies without the @-mention (like this one!) won’t show up in your Mentions tab. You probably don’t need replies to yourself there mixed in with your mentions from other people.

@jarrod thanks, this is good to know. I can leave comments for myself on my own posts. I like this idea
