I worry about unwittingly starting public conversations (aka “arguments”), so I temper my writing/posting. To mitigate this, I’m no longer automatically syndicating from the blog(s) to social media/Micro.blog. daily.baty.net/posts/202…

@jack Oh well. Our loss 😔 I could follow you via a news reader, but I check that less often, and it may not be suited for your ephemeral posts, which I love.

@pratik The result of all this will probably mean that I end up manually cross-posting most stuff and I'll only be wasting more of my own time :).

@jack Yeah, not worth it.

@jack I feel the same as @pratik - it was nice to see all the rambling. I understand why you want to pull back a bit (the whole thing was an experiment to begin with if I remember correctly), still, I enjoyed these mental "nuggets."

@jtr @pratik You didn't find it to be too much noise? Some days I get a little chatty.

@jack @jtr @pratik I sometimes have those days where I feel *waaaay too chatty*, but have found A) those days are rare enough (for me it’s maybe 1/mo, but even at 1/wk it’s still rare enough imo) and B) whenever I’ve said I’m going to pull those thoughts away most people say it’s easy enough to scroll past it and ignore if they don’t care.

When it comes to not wanting to start a conversation, that’s one area I prefer Mastodon because I can give a reply a “like” to acknowledge them in a positive way, but if someone’s reply really annoys me, I’ll just give them a “👍” and move on.

@jack @humdrum @pratik You usually have a single paragraph per "chat burst" from what I saw, these are easy enough to read quickly.

Maybe on the main micro.blog stream it would be, but under a tag in my RSS reader? Nah, easy enough to organize as I please. True for other sites too.

@humdrum Ah! The passive-aggressive 👍🏽. Perhaps I should use a different skin tone to indicate which is genuine and which is sarcastic 😆

@jack Not at all. At least for me. That's what micro posts are for. I rather not fire up my RSS reader and click to a post that only has 10 words. Takes me more effort to get to reading it than actually reading it. The timeline UI is perfect for such posts. @jtr

@jtr I'm definitely going to adopt the phrase "chat burst"! :).

@jtr @humdrum @pratik Another component of this is that sometimes I like to spend time away from social media, but want to continue posting on my sites. If I'm crossposting onto social media feeds, I feel obligated to check frequently for replies to see if I need to follow up.

@jack Don't worry about it. You can reply once a week, once in two weeks, or not at all.

@pratik @jack Seconded. I enjoy replies at any time, and I like not replying if I don't have anything other than chit-chat.

@jack @pratik @jtr iOS Scheduled Summary for notifications is your friend. Took me awhile to build the habit, but unless I’m actively engaged in a conversation, I just wait for my social notifications from the notification summary. Might not work for the people who are consistently engaged in conversations… that’s not me though 😝

@humdrum That’s a good idea. I do it for apps but hey, why not all?

@pratik the only notifications I get now are text messages from very select people, calendar, and when certain teams start and finish games. Otherwise it’s blocked by focus mode or in my scheduled summary.
