Since videos cannot be played on Twitter unless you are signed into an account, we can now definitively say that anybody who posts videos exclusively via their Twitter account are excluding a lot of peopleā€¦ and theyā€™re not even getting paid for it.

@simonwoods is this new? I donā€™t have a Twitter account and can still watch videos there...

@simonwoods Works on iOS šŸ˜‰ Thereā€™s no homepage or anything to search though. I need a direct link or need to know the user handle.

@hutaffe I've seen it for all kinds of videos but one example I just came across: TennisForFree tweet

There are some kinds of vidoes that play... in Moments. I'm not sure if they're uploaded differently or if it's because they're in Moments. Of course Twitter wants to spend exactly 0 effort in making any of this transparent; "just sign in and don't worry about it" I imagine is the party line, as with all of the silos.

@simonwoods That plays for me on the Mac (worse, autoplays! šŸ˜”). Any chance youā€™re blocking some of their JS that builds the player or something?

For a while I could only get videos to play by going to the mobile.twitter.com version of the URL; you might try that and see if it helps you?

@simonwoods Works for me on iOS too. And no autoplay from within the M.b app. //@smokey

(I havenā€™t checked recently, but I think video works in Firefox on macOS as well).

@Bruce @smokey I just tried it in a private window and it worked. I assume this means something about my settings, or an extension is the problem. This is the point where I stick with my initial hesitance to trust the silos for basically anything, let alone reliable hosting of any kind; I would look into it more, in fact that was my old behaviour but it turns out I am not employed by this mega corporations to test their shitty software.

Rather, I go on my way, reminded again as to why it is better for me to simply dismiss these people and their incompetence whilst putting more of my energy into smaller, indie-minded companies who prioritise weird things such as the stuff people post working as much as possible. Meanwhile, I'm sure the silos will instead continue to put their greatest efforts into horrifying ad tech.

@simonwoods Hear ya. Thatā€™s why I still use Twitterrific. And Friendly on iOS for the rare occasional I have to venture into the Book of Faces. (Its a wrapper around the mobile website and blocks the ads. So I donā€™t have to worry about any ā€œmistakesā€ by the Facebook devs).
