Fell down an Obsidian hole. I may be some time. 😩
@herself Yaaaassss. I love it and it's the only tool that really groks with me out of 'em all. Enjoy!
@crossingthethreshold @alongtheray @hjertnes well, I’m back up for air! It’s certainly interesting, especially if you make use of the Obsidian Git plugin... Most of my Dropbox writing files have made the move now, plus zettelkasten. I’m just not sure what to do with things that used to be filed with those documents, that obsidian doesn’t handle. Separate directory? Not sure. I don’t think I’ll write with it, though blogging has been good. But in terms of keeping things together, I like it a lot.
@herself Agreed, Obs is better for throwing things at it rather than a tool for blogging. I love it as a brain dump repository of sorts. It works surprisingly well with iCloud so I can access and edit it on laptop, desktop or iPhone (they have an app in beta so I am using 1Writer for now).
As for external files I stuff em into a subdirectory inside the Obs folder. In settings you can tell Obs where to reference that directory.
@herself Thank you for the report 📝. So I’m hearing that Obsidian is now where you keep your notes? I have not spent long with Obsidian, but one thing that bothered me was its non-Mac like feel. I wonder if I should dive back in. nvUltra is currently my home for notes and the like...not writing or blogging though.
@alongtheray That's interesting! I'll need to take a closer look at my settings. And then you just link to the files themselves?
@crossingthethreshold Well, yes, so far that's what I'm doing. Before I had a series of text interfaces (including nvAlt), so it's not terribly different in that regard. I'd been using Zettlr before now, which is really quite good, but I was just in the mood for something different, I suppose. I'm not too worried about the Mac feel as I work on a Linux laptop as well, and really like the way everything is finally syncing to GitHub now. (You can also theme / apply CSS snippets to Obsidian, so tweaking is encouraged there!)
@herself Yes, the setting is in Setting / Files & Links / Default location for new attachments. I set mine to a sub folder within Obsidian and yes you can link to them from any note.
Further, any filws you include in new notes will be stored there
@alongtheray that’s cool, thanks! I’ve also just discovered the File Path to URI plug-in, which means I can easily link to things outside Obsidian as well...
@alongtheray I just randomly came across it online. I guess that's one good thing about using a popular app: there's a lot of discussion that can be useful when you're figuring out your own workflow...
