Blog hosting question: what platforms do people use these days? Thinking (again) about migrating my wordpress.com blog to…something else. Are there any beginner-friendly resources you’d recommend?

@herself I build my stuff with Jekyll or Hugo, using Netlify free hosting. Would be willing to help walk you through / build something with/for you if you'd like! It's good practice in case I ever want to freelance 😄

@herself If you want to stay with a WordPress install, I've found DreamPress to be pretty good.

@cm @vasta oh wow, i might switch to blot if i could do this, too! even though it's actually less "web-devvy" that i might want ;)

@cm @vasta @eli thanks for that! Blot.im sounds really cool. My only past forays into blogging were back when everyone wrote static pages with HTML, so at least it’s sort-of familiar ;) @cm would be interested in seeing that tutorial too!

@jw thanks!! That is really kind and generous of you. I had a look at Jekyll a while back and I think I was starting to get my head around the structure of it. I hit some sort of road block though, not that I can remember what it was now (unhelpful, sorry!). I think I will have a look at blot.im for now - I rather like how simple it sounds- but you may get me pestering you for help in the future now I know you’re a “Jekyll guy” :)

@Bruce thanks for the recommend. I’m not sure I want to necessarily keep the wordpressiness of the blog, even though it will be more work. I may even just start fresh and leave the old one there without the associated domain mapping. It’s just too mammoth to contemplate, migrating fifteen years’ worth of posts, ugh... ;)

@cm amazing! I adore nvalt- the idea of using that to run my blog is making me excited in a very giddy way.

@herself @bruce though I see blot has some scripts for importing blogs from different platforms. 👍

@cm this looks fascinating. I used to use blot and loved it but I'm always bouncing around. Using it with micro.blog could get me back to it.

@herself the quotes around "Jekyll guy" are definitely deserved, and no problem! and yeah -- blot seems rad enough i might make the switch, too 😀

@jw whoops, sorry, those weren't meant to be ironic quotes (though I do love ironic quotes), more a "non-Jekyll/Hyde" implication for anyone else reading, heh. Been playing around with blot a bit and it's pretty neat. I think I will have to figure out mustache though to tweak the templates a bit, but that'll be a good challenge :)

@herself oh i wasn't bothered - more saying that I know enough to make a thing happen, but I'm no expert!

@jw @herself @cm @vasta I’m so glad I stumbled across this thread. I’m using Ghost for regular blogging right now but as much as I like it, it’s still overkill for what I need it to do. blot.im might be a great alternative and it could allow me to combine the site and the microblog. Thank you all.

@mangochutney that’s awesome! Please do share how it goes if you do decide to go down the blot path! 👍🙌

@herself Beginnner-friendly or not, blot.im is just a great platform for simplicity or posting. I had been running my site with Hugo, but recently decided to get myself on Blot. I capture my experiments here - again run by blot parallel to my actual site.

@vasta I've also been using blot once in while and not consistent though. I've been doing the posts on text edit on Mac manually uploading them onto blot folder in Dropbox. I'm sure there must be a better way. I'd rather prefer if I can do on a mobile device either iOS or Android

@sumudu iA Writer is what I use. It connects directly with Dropbox, so posts can be easily created and edited.
