The time has come to retire my little MacBook Air after 10 years, two books, and countless stories and essays of service, for something new. Considering the M1 Mac Mini. Thoughts and recs welcome.

@twweaver I have an ancient Mac mini I gave a new lease of life to by installing Big Sur to an external SSD. That aside, I really enjoy how it just stays out of the way! I like working at my desk with monitor but do wish I had something like a MacBook Air to work on during between times. Would be hard to go back to working full time on a laptop keyboard though after getting so used to my mechanical keyboard though!

@herself I’m definitely back and forth on laptop v. desktop. But I’ve of come to the conclusion that I keep my work in one space, one area, nowadays, much more than I used to... Glad you dig the paint colors: in our house, if outdoor stuff isn’t visible from space, we’re not interested. 😁

@twweaver Hehe... I have a friend like that; her colonial-era house is bright yellow, with blue and red trim! I get what you mean about liking to keep everything in one space. You sit down there and you are in work mode. Upstairs I faff about but down in my "work cave" I mostly keep on track.

@herself Ha! My wife would love that place. When we first got together and I came to her house for the first time, all of the walls were (and remain, ten years later) bright red: it was like walking into a pair of candy lips.

@twweaver Why not the M1 MacBook Air? It's quite capable. (And you might be able to travel again one day.) I have purcashed one, and no regrets at at all. Don't have experience with the Mini, but the new M1 is definitely the right way to go (although you can also get a good deal on a lightly used Intel MacBook Air about now as well, and any modern Mac would be a huge improvement over your old one, M1 or not).
