Now that I’ve started carrying a pocket notebook with me everywhere, I find myself writing down more and more blog/writing ideas. Which I love. Used to, I would try and remember them all. Which always failed.

@greghiggins Just yesterday I had an idea in the morning, felt sure I'd remember it later but forgot it. Part of me thinks "I'll remember the best ideas" but as I can't remember what I forgot, I never know if it's true or not!

@ChrisJWilson I used to pride myself in my memory. And I can remember a lot of stupid stuff. But it seems I forget the important stuff.

@greghiggins @gr36 @chrisjwilson Field Notes has a saying on every video they make that says “I’m not writing it down to remember it later, I’m writing it down to remember it now” and I can’t think of a more perfect way to explain why I always carry a notebook.

@jeffperry @greghiggins @gr36 How do you understand that expression? I've always thought of it as to be about the significance of the act of note taking in creating memories and solidifying ideas, but reading it in the context of this conversation, I'm less sure.

@ChrisJWilson @jeffperry @gr36 I think it can definitely mean the way you have always taken it. In my experience, though, I don't tend to go back and look at notes that I've written down. Something about the act of writing it down helps me to remember it. If that makes sense.

@greghiggins yeah there’s this thing call diegetic note taking which is mainly hand writing and how writing something down with your hands helps you retain that information better.

I also write down stuff to help empty my brain with that information and have a tangible way to look at the problem.

@jeffperry I'm the same way. I love working through a problem like that. I have a notebook that I use for sports broadcasting. I write down all the notes I find. I tend to remember the information when I'm broadcasting better that way.
