This rant towards the NY Times is perfect.

Trump may be openly attacking the press, but he cannot force them to play his stupid us-vs-them games. The fourth estate has committed suicide, sacrificing our culture so their businesses could survive the internet.

@gerwitz Hang on. Your words here are super generalised and exactly right in the tone of us-vs-them. Meanwhile, Gregg Gonsalves is specifically calling out the political desk of the NYT.

I understand how good it feels to rant with righteous language but this type of language in no way reflects Gregg's specific POV or provides anything constructive to the discussion.

A reminder: "the fourth estate" is mostly made up of people just like you and me.

@simonwoods I was trying to fit into one tweet. #classicexcuse

Fair, fair … but generalizations are useful, and I do mean to complain about the industry using his complaint about the NYT politics desk as an anecdote. I don’t envy these corporations that are looking for new, viable business models and I certainly don’t fault every individual that are a part of them.

@gerwitz 👍

I think we, as a society, have a lot of work to do in building such industries for the future. I'm not at all confident that the current trade market-based environment will work for journalism.

@simonwoods indeed, the market is unlikely to solve this social issue. I'm trying not to make every gripe-post about capitalism, but 🤷‍♂️

@gerwitz I mean, it's everywhere. This is what we have done; we have been swimming in it for such a long time now that it's extremely difficult to not see the world within a capitalist context.
