I’m with Om on this. I’ve replaced our Alexa device with a HomePod as I’m no longer willing to give Google or Amazon audio access to our home:
@adders I don’t use Google for anything, except the few times I add a !google in DuckDuckGo. I’m done with Google and Facebooks bullshit
@hjertnes @adders Due to some pretty big positive life changes coming soon, over the next 12 months our household is finally converting away from Google and then to Apple as much as possible. I'm looking forward to extracting all of my stuff from Google in particular, since our ties to Amazon and Facebook are already tenuous at best.
@adders I'm waiting for Mozilla to come out with their 2nd generation Mycroft device which is much delayed but I'm willing to wait.
@simonwoods Good luck. It’s a long and painful process, and you often end up with solutions that are worse. But what helps me is a text file explaining why I started doing it in the first place
@simonwoods I left Google back in 2011, due to their shenanigans. Haven’t looked back.
It was much easier than I imagined.
@hjertnes That's a very good idea. Since I already want a lot of my data in plain text where possible, I'll definitely give that a try. I've also been completely ignoring the often time-wasting activity of trying alternative organisational software so there's a chance any pain will be minimal at worst.
@furstenberg In the end the so-called trade-off in which you gain convenience never materalised for me; rather, all I can see is the terrible inefficiency, hostile design, and outright devious manipulation. No matter the learning curve in alternative technologies, I feel so much better than sticking with a terrible default option.
