🔗 Nanoleaf’s smart holiday string lights are over half off - The Verge // Sheena Vasani

If you’ve got a holiday party or gathering coming up, Nanoleaf’s Essentials Matter Smart Holiday String Lights will help set the mood without putting a dent in your wallet. Typically $119.99, right now, the 65-foot string lights are only $44.99 at Best Buy, which is significantly cheaper than they were on Black Friday and a new all-time low.

Damn, now that’s a good deal!

@jarrod I was looking at these for outdoor use. I saw the brand in Lowes, too, so I assume it is decent enough, but there’s some issue with these having the power connection in the middle of the string instead of at the end.

@pratik I’ve used Nanoleaf stuff and had good experiences either it. Never tried Govee. But the middle connection would be kind of weird.

@stupendousman Really? Just toss the extra part? We were thinking of installing on our front porch for festivals.

@stupendousman hate to waste it but glad to know you can cut it and the rest work. How did you deal with the connector in the middle?

@stupendousman The 32.5 ft is in fact the 65 ft, with the connection in the middle right?

@stupendousman @pratik @jarrod They put the power supply in the middle to get the most reliable signaling all the way down to each end. The part you cut off can be reused by carefully cutting back the waterproof coating and soldering new leads onto the pads, but you need to know what you’re doing.

@jarrod Thank you for this tip. I knew this would be a hit so I ordered two. They were an even bigger hit than I imagined, so I just ordered three more!

The firmware upgrade was very flaky and failed repeatedly (which may be why they put them on sale) but it eventually worked. Persistence pays off!
