Understaffing as a form of enshittfification.By Cory Doctorow. Understaffing helps big business shift value from workers, patients and customers to investors. It annoys customers, immiserates employees and — in the case of healthcare — threatens lives.

@MitchWagner And yet somehow Eugene - a city of nearly 200K people - has no emergency room. I can’t help thinking we’ve lost the plot here, if a market this size can’t even attract enough investors to enshittify it.

@ffmike What do you do if you need an emergency room?

@MitchWagner For anything severe, I’ll be calling 911. Closest fire station with ambulance is less than half a mile away. Closest ER is 20-30 minute drive.

On the plus side, my doctor is willing to make house calls.

@ffmike A doctor making house calls? Does he carry a little black bag?

@MitchWagner I dunno, I’ve never had to actually call him for one. But it’s comforting to know he’s available.

He also answers email quickly and is happy to discuss my questions in detail.

It should come as no surprise that this is direct primary care, ie “concierge medicine.”
