When they say “bodyweight exercises” are we allowed to choose the body?

Next week, we start with resistance bands but this week has been all bodyweight with a few things like a towel and a yoga block. You never thought a towel could be so heavy.

@ezellwrites Definitely the cheapest way to do weight training. I have a couple of health and fitness magazines I bought that have body weight training, and apart from a yoga mat, 2 or 3 sets of dumbbells, and kettlebells there’s nothing else needed. Convenient as I’m not sure I’d want to go into a gym any time soon.

@pimoore I'm really enjoying it. I have some dumbbells, some bands, some yoga blocks, and with a good program, I'm set. This is my first week. I'm hoping to bring back in some running next week or the week after once my body stops screaming at me.

@ezellwrites I’m still afraid to try running as I’m tall, far too overweight, and my knees already give me issues. My doctor also told me it’s hard on the joints in general, but I’ve also read the contrary so long as you have good shoes and proper technique.

@pimoore Walking is great. And I also did this None to Run program and it worked very well for me as a non-runner — though I was already in some shape but nothing outstanding.

@pimoore I started running at 275 pounds. I'm 6'1". I did couch-to-5k at first and focused hard on form and economy as opposed to pace or distance. Once I built up some endurance and strength, I kept going. I've run multiple ultramarathons since. Just take it slow!

@ezellwrites That’s close to where I’m at now, 260lbs and 6’3”. Form will be most important for me as my knees crack half the time I get up from my chair. 😂 Now that stores are starting to open back up I need to take another look at shoes, or maybe order some online based on recommendations (though I’m hesitant without being able to try them on).

Congrats on the ultramarathons, that’s a huge accomplishment! 🎉

@agilelisa Thanks for that link, gonna check it out! 🙏 Everything I’ve ever read says that running is one of the best fat and weight loss exercises there is, second only to rowing/cross country skiing I believe. And rowing you have to be careful with over-extension of your knees.

@pimoore I've been off running for over a year because of some unrelated medical issues. Just now getting back to it. I treat it as my mental health medicine. Thinking about it like that helps it be less about performance and such. Just getting out there is key.

@ezellwrites I’ve lost count of the number of writers that run for that same reason. Not only for mental health, but they find it to be a source of inspiration as their brain contemplates ideas for their writing.
