@gregmorris Apple haven’t *started* to turn a focus on money alone, they’ve been that way for years. They’re just running out of the subtler ways of making themselves look good, whilst also saving money (like removing chargers and the like) and they’ve moved onto the less subtle money gouging methods.
@gregmorris I’m *so* close to getting out as well. The premium and the lack of performance on assistant and other areas used to be justified, at least by me, by the fact Apple were on the ‘good’ side but they seem to be no better than anyone else. The CMF Phone has made it clear to me I really don’t need a -£1100 phone for what I use it for.
@gregmorris nothing are currently the company on the android side most appealing to me. I do wonder about these US exclusives and whether they’re to spit the EU, for a slow rollout so as not to overwhelm their servers or for a genuine reason that EU law blocks them (threads and meta have struggled). If it’s the final case, that’s not a great sign in my books.
@gregmorris We left years ago. We got into Apple when it was the plucky upstart standing up to The Man. Later, two things changed: 1. Apple was no longer the upstart, just another manifestation of The Man, with (possibly) better hardware. Not sure anymore about the better hardware! 2. We looked at our wallets. You can buy an excellent laptop for less than $500, an excellent smartphone for a couple of hundred. At some point you have to ask, How much are a couple of coveted apps worth to you?
@gregmorris "I ultimately won’t due to my love of the Mac and Apple Watch, but mainly because I don’t trust Google either!"
Amen! Unlike the 2024 American Presidential election, where I find no acceptable major-party choice, I feel a partisan loyalty to Apple without illusions about how perfect it is.
@gregmorris 💯 I still can't imagine leaving my Mac behind but if Apple continues macOS' downfall this might last only a couple of years. As far as the phone is concerned, I've now reached the point where I could imagine switching. That would have been unthinkable for me a few years ago.
