Question for people who have switched email accounts after a long time with one service - I’ve had the same Gmail account since 2005 but I’m thinking of switching to Proton or Hey! What were your biggest pain points?

@amerpie I switched to Proton. I found people will never stop sending stuff to my gmail 😂. Also, I have YouTube accounts and Google won't email stuff about that anywhere else. 🤷‍♀️

@amerpie I migrated to Fastmail and honestly I don't remember having much pain at all. This was email at my own domain that I moved to Fastmail, however. I wasn't moving an @gmail.com address.

@amerpie Since I believe forwarding is a bad idea, I came to terms with the fact that I'll have to sporadically go check the old account. There will always be a service I haven't changed the address yet because in my case it's a pretty old Gmail account from the "invitation-only" times.

@amerpie @vladcampos depending on volume it’ll probably take forever, but you could enable IMAP on your Gmail account and use the excellent imapsync tool to copy all your email across to the new account: imapsync.lamiral.info
