Investing in a Synology has been one of the best tech decisions I’ve made in a long time. I currently have it running Plex (with a host of supporting apps), a Pastebin, a home surveillance system, Homebridge, and a couple smaller things. Highly recommend.
@Mtt what model did you go with, and how do you find it with Plex? Do you stream over WiFi or Ethernet? The only way I’ve ever got half decent results is Ethernet but it’s such a pain!
@Mtt awesome. Mine is on the way after Black Friday. Not sure if it will be better to move full Plex server on there or just storage.
@dfr I went with a DS423+. We stream over Ethernet, WiFi, and remotely as well (including cellular) with no issues.
@toddgrotenhuis You’ll love it. What model did you go with? That might determine your best Plex strategy.
@toddgrotenhuis That is one that can do Plex transcoding, so it can give you the full Plex Pass experience. If you’re basically using it for your family and haven’t invited a while community to your Plex library, you’d be fine.
Follow these guides all the way through and you’ll have an excellent Plex setup with the full -arr suite powering it.

@Mtt yeah, it’s just for my family right now, and mostly music with some of our DVDs ripped and HDHomeRun of some OTA news, classic shows, etc.
Thinking about Tailscale to privately expose it without a lot of config headache.
@Mtt Same for me. At first, I thought it was a bit expansive for my needs but at the end of the day, it was well worth it! Use it everyday!
