Since the re-awakening of my tumblr blog, I been enjoying the discussion on this evening on running a blog. But honestly, I’m out of my depth.

@derekpeden Do you keep a local copy of all your posts to Tumblr? I ask only because if anything happened there, they could be lost. And could you get your own domain, and use that at Tumblr? That’s an important first step for IndieWeb. Although the recent move on .eu domains shows even that may not be secure.
@jeremycherfas I’d started to reply but thought it worthy of a new post...
@derekpeden Very clear. You say you do not want to fork over GBP240 a year for a business WP.com site. How much would you be willing to pay? There are some good hosts who offer managed WP sites and will handle Domain registration for you. I no longer use Tumblr myself (long story ...) but a very useful first step would be to obtain a domain and use tyat for your Tumblr, for now.
@jeremycherfas update: Markdown problem with Wordpress fixed thanks to @teisam . Setting is buried DEEP inside Wordpress settings
@derekpeden I know that feeling! Most people start at level 100 & I'm level 1. But, I have managed to set up a blog with WordPress.org, on basic shared hosting. I've had a lot of help along the way, but I've done it.
@derekpeden how are you going to export tumblr with mars edit - one at a time - or simply bulk copy over somehow ?
@derekpeden I went with Dreamhost in the end. Researched a load, particularly UK ones, but they won out. Not the cheapest, but WhoIs privacy was free, and so far it's been ok. If I stick with it I'll get their 3-year deal next time.
@vanessa “sticking with it” is the main reason I want to keep initial costs down. This might be something I loose interest in (as with previous other blogs I’ve started)
@derekpeden but what did you do - with mars edit you can see tumblr posts - in my case back 2010 - but to move OFF tumblr to a different environment - it feels like 1 by 1 - unless I am missing something (which I quite easily could be!)
@JohnPhilpin opened each one (of 3); amended the links; changed blog and submitted. Not migrate everything but that’s fine at the moment.
@derekpeden Quite agree. I have a couple of other sites hosted on 10 Centuries and one of those is my main blog. I wanted to try the Indie thing, though, which really meant something I could meddle with, rather than accept someone else's setup.
@JohnPhilpin oh... not sure MarsEdit can help you there ( @danielpunkass ) . Maybe with some Applescript or Keyboard Maestro
@derekpeden actually just set up this as a WP and going to see what an import to there looks like.
@derekpeden thanks - i think i am fixing it via an initial WP import first // @danielpunkass
