Here is my ideal smart lighting system: Lights turn on and off as you enter/leave rooms. Lights in rooms visible from my current room are on (maybe dimmed). Lights adjust their intensity based on ambient conditions. If the sun is shining brightly through the windows, they dim, b... david.ely.fm

@davextreme I don't know of anything off the shelf that woudl do what you want out of the box, but it's possible someone could put something together using different components and something like Home Assistant (open source home automation system, very customizable). The one that I'm really not sure would be possible would be the color temp one, becuase so many smart bulbs dont' know what to do if they lose power, and the control of lights being on and off should pretty much always reside in the switch not the bulbs, but color temp pretty much has to be handled by the bulbs.

Though it's possible you could set up something up that would have bulbs check in with the hub as they turn on to figure out what color temp they should be when they turn on. But it would have to happen very fast.

@DrOct Most smart bulbs, from what I understand, do not like being turned off manually, which fails my usability test. A better solution would probably be a kit to rewire lamps so they can turn off heir bulbs via their own switches or from commands.

@davextreme If you're willing to give up on the color temp thing, smart switches can do most of what you want (including dimming etc, though maybe not on a bulb by bulb basis).

@davextreme Also you got me looking at more smart switches again. I'm very happy with my Caseta set for the basement and figure I'll just keep going with that as I'm happy with the performance and compatibility (works with pretty much every home automation system). But I have to do some looking at my switches to figure out exactly how to install them in the various places (figure out which have neutral wires etc.).

I'm also still trying to figure out how to handle the porch light and fan, as those are both in half-size switches that fill one normal switch receptical. But I would love to have the porch light turn on around sunset and off around sunrise.

@DrOct For the moment I’m sticking with the few smart switches and plugs I have. Those all work pretty much as expected. I’d rather have less functionality but reliability + usability.

@davextreme I'm confident I could replace the various switches in the house and have everythng work as expected and reliably (it does in the basement!). With the exception of some of the lamps which I'd probably just leave on manual control in regular outlets to avoid confusion and usabiltiy issues.

@davextreme I LOVE the idea of changing color tempuratures/colors in lights, but I agree that for now the reliability and usability just isn't there in smart-bulbs.
