For the last few days I’ve been inadvertently working on a floor desk. I’m working at my in-laws small holding and although they have a table, it’s in the kitchen so I can’t work there. So instead, I’ve propped my laptop on a suitcase and typed away. It’s surprisingly comfortable but I do need to switch ev... chrisjwilson.me

@ChrisJWilson I’ve been floor-desk curious for a bit but I don’t know if I’d would actually be able to commit to it long term. I also try to work from home as little as possible so that limits things as well

@danalcantara @ChrisJWilson I work from my futon/bed on the floor of my tiny house about 90% of the time. I have a desk I work at sometimes and if the weather is nice I'll work on my porch. But the futon and surrounding area is maximized for comfort and work. Shelves on either side, pillows for comfort and improvised positioning of my iPad at different levels on my lap. A second display on an arm clamped to one of the shelves, a clamped, adjustable iPad stand on that same shelf. it's like a comfort cocoon work station. 🤣

@ChrisJWilson this is very interesting. I remember early in lockdown people selling floor desks and vimeo courses on all the ways you can position yourself for work.

@Denny do you kneel or sit legs straight out? I’ve been cross legged and kneeling and it seems much better to me. I was slightly inspired by some advice I heard that you should spend 30 mins on the ground each day to build / stay flexible. I’d also bet the iPad and its flexibility is great for this.

@ChrisJWilson floor desks have never appealed to me, but I'm really attracted to the way Roald Dahl had a desk on a comfy chair rather than relying on a fixed desk.

@philbowell When I first moved to Spain, I used an ikea Poäng to work and write in. It was surprisingly comfortable and I can easily imagine going the full Dahl would be even nicer (especially with the shed at the bottom of the garden!)

@ChrisJWilson I think the shed has a big appeal as well. Now I’m looking for chair desks… 😂

@ChrisJWilson 😂 If I were to use a floor desk my session would be really, really short. I can barely get down on the floor, and once I'm there I always check to see if there is something more I can do there before I try to get up again 😁. Seriously I can barely put on my socks, and sitting straight in a 90 degree angle is just a dream. Cross-legged ... 🤣. In other words, I'm envious of you being able considering doing this.

@ChrisJWilson I recline up against a very large bean bag that sits permanently at the end of the futon, against a wall. My legs are usually straight out. Sometimes I'll bend them up a bit. The overall position is much more akin to lounging back on a big floofy recliner. I don't think I could sit very long in a cross legged position. Maybe kneeling for a short time. But both of those seem closer to perpendicular desk sitting with good, upright posture. I can't nap in that kind of position. 😂

@philbowell @ChrisJWilson Yes, if I were not using a futon most of the time a desk on a comfy chair would be the way! My desk is, in truth, mostly a cat feeding station. 😃

@Denny Ha! I think this kind of position is supposed to be good for movement stuff which is part of what has intrigued me about floor desks (aside from this happenstance).

@jemostrom Years of teaching little kids and doing on the floor activities have certainly helped. Part of my intrigue with floor desks is too keep my mobility. Crossing my legs is becoming a pain. I'll take your words as another reason to be grateful!
