Is there really no such thing as currently playing in Overcast? Trying to get Play Next to make sense and control my current listening session is quite difficult when compared to Pocket Casts.

Maybe it’s my SE? I know that Marco can’t wait to drop support for it.

@simonwoods can you describe it a little more? Having a hard time understanding what you mean. There’s definitely a Now Playing screen and podcast...

@jsonbecker Now Playing is there but without my upcoming list -- which I created by choosing a playlist and adding individual episodes to "Play Next" -- I don't think there is a true representation of currently playing.

Meanwhile, in Pocket Casts I have access to "Up Next". It's a list of everything queued to play in which I can move episodes around and even remove them. It's a visible result of adding to "Play Next", whilst in Overcast I choose "Play Next" and I have no indication as to whether my action was successful or not.

Even Apple Music has an Up Next option, whilst Marco is using one of the few button options for... a timer. A thing I have never used and will never use.

@simonwoods I see my currently-playing podcast along the bottom edge of the screen, and I can expand it with the arrow icon in the lower left-hand side. Maybe it’s not showing up on yours?

@cygnoir That works fine, yep. My language was vague; I'm talking more about the general concept of currently playing, which for me in a media player must always include access to the queued episodes. Either Overcast doesn't have it or this is a bug.

@simonwoods within a playlist, play next just moves it after the episode you’re playing in the current playlist. And all playlists can just be reordered however. So maybe I’m not understanding how you use it, but I don’t have some separate transient “playing session” list— it’s just what I’m playing and what’s next is whatever is next in that order.

I also just use a single playlist with all podcasts because it’s so easy to reorder thing that enables me to do whatever I need.

@simonwoods photos aren’t allowed in replies but in a play list click the down caret to see the options and the button that is like a hamburger button with a plus gives you the option to play next... is that what you’re looking for?

@simonwoods Coming from PocketCast I found this confusing at first as well. In Overcast you creat playlists, podcasts get added to the playlists(manual add or auto). You play podcasts in the playlist. That's basically it. No concept of a UpNext play queue as in PocketCasts.

@jsonbecker I've just figured out a hack; edit the currently playing playlist via the "Edit" button within the playlist. I mean, it feels like a hack when compared to simply having access to the queue.

I'm starting remember how the playlists are essentially considered the One True Source in this app, from which you manage currently playing. Unsure how I feel about that since having access to my queue became such a nice, easy way to manage this.

@simonwoods you can just create a queue playlist. I don’t quite understand how that would functionally work different. Also, this is an area where 5S maybe hurts because you can also drag and drop episodes but maybe that feature doesn’t work on the 5S?

@mcg Yep. I've remembered the hack-ish way of doing it. I think I ended up enjoying it enough in the past so maybe it'll work out again this time.

@jsonbecker lol funnily enough I just used it and it was ok, although it was only one episode.

The main way it works differently is that I am now going out of my way to create said list, whereas it just always exists in Pocket Casts. However I have now remembered that the queue sort-of exists within the nature of the playlists. It's not too bad.

@simonwoods yeah either I think you embrace the queue within the playlist or you can just have a persistent playlist called queue and another one called all episodes and move things to the queue just like ... adding things to the queue... and manage your queue in the queue playlist. A queue operates the same as a playlist.

@simonwoods I used a few auto-playlists that would add podcasts based on activity or time of day. Or have some dedicated to news/politics. Open the playlist and listen. Just recently switched back to PocketCasts tho.

@jsonbecker You're clearly at a point where the app works well within your mental model.

@mcg I'm gonna do the same, just see how it goes. If I miss the persistent queue enough then I'll just go back to Pocket Casts.

@simonwoods Add a playlist called exactly “Queue” for special manual queue behavior. This old post explains it.
