The longer I go between opening the Facebook app (to check posts from the kids’ schools) the more needy Facebook becomes - sending a steady stream of notifications in email and push. Often nothing more than “oh look, someone you’ve never met posted a photo!”. Yes, they’re evil.

@ronguest It's kind of suffocating to check FB lately. I just check it on a browser on my desktop and phone (the FB and Messenger apps are long gone from my phone), and that's about as much as I can stomach.

@garciabuxton That’s a good reminder. I just deleted the app from my phone and iPad. ✅

@ronguest Oh, that is really evil. Starting this year (or maybe late last year, after I signed off for the holidays), I started getting an email every single day about some activity—but they were always people I knew, at least, even if they weren’t necessarily the people who’d entice me back. In years past, the emails would decline in frequency and trickle off, but something definitely changed in the past year; FB must really be hurting to keep up those DAUs/MAUs.

Also, most of the ads I see on my phone—despite never visiting the site on my phone except once, 3+ years ago in order to get my password into the phone’s keychain in case I ever needed it there, and zapping cookies afterwards, and not having the app installed—are FB ads, but they’re the spammiest, low-rent ads I’ve ever seen a major company put out!

Hopefully next school year your kids’ schools will have figured out an alternative communication method that isn’t actively seeking to undermine our republic 🤞

@ronguest yep, it was like that for me to and I couldn’t find a way to disable that “feature”. There was no “only notifications if someone tries to contact me” option. Well, deleting my account solved my problem.

@ronguest Pure desperation. Same thing happening here. Only reason I keep an account is to check marketplace for obscure items... like the 30 drawer library card catalogue I bought yesterday. A card catalog bought on social media... oh the irony.

@joshuapsteele Same here. I deleted FB a couple of months ago now, and in truth it feels like a weight off my shoulders. I'm still trying to figure out a quick way of communication with my sister in New Zealand without Messenger, but we managed before and will manage now.
