I’ve used BBEdit for years now. It’s fabulous for working with and processing text. Today I whisked up an Applescript that numbers selected lines so as to create a Markdown numbered list. The built-in line numbering function doesn’t seem to allow me to add the dot I want.
@Miraz Can you point me in a helpful direction to learn Applescript? I feel that if I knew what I could do with AS, I would be more keen on learning and using it.
@crossingthethreshold Sure. I’ll take a look in the morning. Pretty sure I once wrote some small tutorials. It’s very powerful though also a bit quirky. I’m no expert.
@crossingthethreshold @Miraz Speaking of automation on Apple's platforms: it might be worth checking out the Shortcuts app as well. It's been available on iOS and iPadOS for a while and enables automating things via drag and drop. It's coming to macOS Monterey this fall.
@crossingthethreshold This free book from 2003 would be a place to start: Applescript for Absolute Starters : Bert Altenburg : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive. Given its age, some things might not work any more but it must have been useful to me since it's the first thing I found in a search of my hard drive. 😀
@sod @crossingthethreshold Good thought thanks. There's also Automator already on the Mac. My favourite automation app is Keyboard Maestro — so powerful.
