@cleverdevil Ugh. More "interactive" email is the last thing the internet needs.

@manton seriously! HTML email is the source of all sorts of problems, especially privacy and tracking concerns. Oh, and it makes creating an email client massively more complex.

@cleverdevil I knew there was a reason I deleted my Gmail address!

@cleverdevil The Verge, owned by AMP partner Vox Media, appears to have regurgitated Google’s press release without acknowledging its relationship to AMP. I have the feeling there will be a lot of regret about AMP on all parties’ parts by the time all is said & done.

@schuth that's extra gross. I hope people call them on it!

@cleverdevil @gruber has been pretty vocal about amp in the past - I expect he will be calling them out pretty soon.

@JohnPhilpin as he should. AMP is a terrible idea born out of laziness and the overbuilt web.

@cleverdevil Verge just bans people who call them out on things. It’s happened to me in the past and they’ve gone as far as remove all my comments I’ve ever made, regardless of the topic.

@cleverdevil @manton what troubles me further is they term it an open spec. Is it open in the same manner as AMP? Or is it another attempt to break the last open messaging system? Won’t it of course just work in gmail, and chrome?

@amit sadly, between GMail and Chrome, they've got a plurality of email users. Maybe a majority, honestly.

@cleverdevil Also control. If companies are willing to practically give up traffic and visitors and hand them over to Google, why wouldn’t they push for it? Not that I agree with AMP, but it makes sense for Google.

@amit Bingo. Gmail must be by leaps & bounds the largest free email provider not behind the Great Firewall. All the AMP/Gmail engagement data will go straight into Google’s datafarms. In a better world, antitrust lawsuits would be forthcoming, if not already underway.

@cleverdevil that’s the biggest problem we face as a community, users won’t realise what they are giving up if they keep getting new shiny features in their free service.

@schuth yes. Completely agreed. This is the headline MIT technology review had - “You’ll soon be able to browse parts of the web without leaving Gmail.” Sure, exactly what Google would want.

@manton does this mean we shouldn’t hold our breath for AMP interactive Micro.blog posts?

We wouldn’t even have to leave our feed!

@oyam @cleverdevil my rule of thumb is that if it makes sense for google it might not make sense for me.
