Considering a switch to iA Writer for my writing. Something doesn’t feel right with Ulysses or Obsidian these days, I want something with the right balance of simplicity and features.

@philbowell iA writer is the best writing experience IMO (maybe not the best file management or publishing, but writing for sure).

@ChrisJWilson yeh, I’ve noticed my lack of writing relates to my dissatisfaction with the tools I have. Had iA for years on iOS/iPadOS but never on Mac. It’s really nice so far.

@ChrisJWilson @philbowell Interesting. I am using Ulysses but I was looking at long-term solutions because I want to get away from subscription-based apps. iA is on my radar.

I don't have to make a decision until August next year.

@codemaclife I’m in the same position! Trying to reduce subscription fatigue and realised I’ve hardly used Ulysses for months

@philbowell I have a Writing folder in my Obsidian vault, but then I point IA Writer to it. Kind of a happy medium for me.

@johnchandler @philbowell this is the way.

@philbowell I'm considering the same. Ulysses has been laggy for me lately, and completely locked up three times while writing a post. No data loss thankfully, but it did not leave a good impression.

@philbowell I’m going to give iA Writer a go for a while. I’ve been using Ulysses and have not had many problems. But I have both, so why not?

@pimoore yeh, it feels like it’s becoming quite a heavy application, which it never was before. I’ve had some lagginess as well come to think of it.

@ericgregorich quite right! See which suits you. I always liked iA on the iPad but never had the newer version on the Mac. We’ll see how the trial goes.

@johnchandler that’s a good shout. My Obsidian use has died out though, I can’t put my finger on why though. I think it’s just too much for me at the moment.

@philbowell I will save up to get iA Writer for my iPad and MacBook Air. I don’t need to make the change until August so I will keep a close eye on the app’s development.

@codemaclife I bought iA writer 10+ years ago. I still get updates. I don’t really understand it but I appreciate it. A nice new touch is it will highlight anything you pasted in (the pitch being to notice AI generated text vs your writing). It’s a great example of keeping their minimal distraction free writing still there while adding small features.

@ChrisJWilson That's good to know. Thanks for input. I will most likely go with iA Writer in the summer time.
