Forest & Bird Says National Parks Not Game Parks:

“The Minister has today announced he is going to start a process to provide special protected status to Wapiti deer, an introduced feral species contributing to biodiversity damage in Fiordland National Park – home to unique and much-loved endangered species such as kākāpō, kiwi, kea, pīwauwau rock wren, and whio blue duck.”

@Miraz I stayed at an AirBNB of someone whose grandfather started a business hunting those after WWI, shipping venison to Europe. Could that still be going on?

@cliffordbeshers I fully expect it does and in general approve of hunting those destructive exotic species. The problem here is not that they are to be hunted in the National Park (a good thing in order to protect our precious native flora and fauna) but that they are to be protected in the Park so that hunters can hunt them. It’s absolute insanity.
