I had just posted for the day when that other website served up a memory, a photo from 8 years ago that should make a very nice #WhatsItWednesday.
@cliffordbeshers I would guess that it is a watery surface, photographed from the side with a polarized lens, reflecting something with strong horizontal lines. Maybe an art instillation or tall building. (This is super difficult because, even though I can see bubbles, the circular patterns are so strong and don't turn transparent along the curves.)
@gregmoore Absolutely correct, with the choice of tall buildings. You might have a shot at guessing where I took this.
@cliffordbeshers My only guess would be Dallas, Texas because they have lots of those 80’s style office towers?
@gregmoore 🤯 I don’t know how you could see all this (I saw Clifford confirm)… I would guess oil in water or something.
@odd @gregmoore Does downtown Dallas have relatively calm water in the midst of skyscrapers? I've only been in conference centers there. In any case, closer to home, and I think that water will always have a sheen of oil on it.
@cliffordbeshers I figured it was something like a shallow fountain. I really don't have an idea of a location since the image is so close up with no distinguishing features.
@gregmoore I figured it was a long shot, but I'd be surprised if you weren't aware of this location. You see it briefly in any TV show or movie set in this city, and it is on the news every year in March.
@odd It's a complex photo because the distortions don't really work like you expect them to. At first I thought it was either a printed metal or glass surface because it looks like there are distortion points where one would attach a frame to manufacture the surface. After inspecting those however, I realized there were too many and that they must be bubbles. The lower right corner also has a small, blue plastic looking thing floating right on the surface.
@gregmoore I just remembered, I have a very similar shot from Sydney, where the water is in a small fountain. This is an actual body of water, but somewhat confined, both naturally and artificially, which accounts for the smoothness, but there is a lot of surface activity, which causes the waves.
Unlikely you will figure it out, I think, but likely you will know the place when I reveal it.
@cliffordbeshers I was thinking about the Buckingham Fountain in Chicago but the high rises seem to far away…
@odd @gregmoore It's actually the Chicago River. I took it from the Chicago Riverwalk on the south side, looking north.
@cliffordbeshers Ah, yes, I’ve seen a reportage about it, and how they made the whole area more accessible and inviting.
