I drove through Death Valley National Park yesterday, and I had the pleasure of witnessing this dust devil.

Correction: I did drive through Death Valley, but this was near Ash Meadows.

@cliffordbeshers I always like to imagine how incomprehensible things like dust devils must have been to the first people to experience them. Even your photograph feels amazingly other-worldly.

@cliffordbeshers Nice shot! Are dust devils the dry weather version of tornadoes? 🌪️

@odd Good question. Point of origin and size, it seems.

The key factor is deciphering between the two is where the twister originates from. A tornado must originate from clouds. If the vortex extends from the ground to the funnel at the base of the cloud, it is then classified at a tornado. In comparison, dust devils originate from a whirlwind on the ground and typically do not grow very big.

@gregmoore I thought it was fire, at first. Someone nearby brought up their phone to take a picture and said, "Whoa, that's really big."

@cliffordbeshers Thanks for the find. That probably means that sandstorms are originated in cloud systems higher up, if I understand correctly.
