Near Lida Pass (Nevada), looking west to the Sierra Nevada (California). I love this view because on the drive from Las Vegas, it means I’m nearly home. Really, there’s still two hours to drive, with many ups and downs, but once I can see the Sierra, it feels downhill.

Layers of mountains receding into the distance. The last range is snow-capped.

@cliffordbeshers Nice panorama. I have no desire to go to Las Vegas again, really, but a bit northwest and over the NP and down to the coast again I wouldn’t mind.

@cliffordbeshers That's a view of the White Mountains I've never seen or even imagined. Very cool. I had never thought of the fact that from Bishop, Las Vegas airport is closer than LAX. That's a long lonely drive to/from the airport.

@jimrea Yup. Minimum of four hours to a big airport. On the other hand, when I choose to fly out of LA, I get a bit claustrophobic. The open space is addictive.

@cliffordbeshers Are there any connecting flights to Bishop that’s a viable alternative?

@odd There are sometimes seasonal flights for the ski season, but they have struggled to be profitable when flying into Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH), in part because they had to cancel so many flights due to weather. Just this past winter (Dec-Mar), United ran the service out of Bishop (BIH) instead. While further from the ski area, BIH is 3000' lower, in a much more sheltered location; it gets high winds, but rarely snow, and it has a huge runway suitable for landing into the prevailing gale. They ran flights to San Francisco, LA, and Denver. I think it was successful, and there's an indication that they will run flights in the summer, as well. Though likely the connections will be terrible, it will still be more cost effective than driving six hours each way with a night in a hotel and parking at $12/day. Fingers crossed.

@cliffordbeshers Hope it will. I guess the local businesses are keen to keep it going as well.
