Last note on AI for today, w.r.t. energy. Every computer uses power. The apps we use, SaaS apps in data centers, etc. This is fine, provided that the use provides real utility. @cleverdevil Agreed here as well. This part of people’s objections is about whether humanity benefits more from the energy use than the costs incurred. OpenAI and the like should be made to justify any environmental impact they make, as should any other large industrial enterprise.

@fgtech responsible technologists have to push their companies to deploy any technology to create positive impact on the world. The energy requirements of training LLMs make this even more true. The good news is that so many of the hype-y use cases can use small, low cost, energy efficient models with open training sets today.
