My personal email is on my own domain, but is backed by Google’s GSuite. They claim that they don’t index and use the content for ads like they do with GMail, but I am skeptical. Maybe this year is when I finally migrate my email elsewhere... #FreeIsntFree

@cleverdevil My main email was also on my domain name and backed by GSuite. A few months ago I migrated it to Fastmail. It was easy and I'm happy with the new setup. Searching emails seems a bit slower.

@Miraz I’ve heard so many good things about Fastmail. That’s likely where I’ll transition later this year.

@Zak yeah those are the two I’m considering. It’s good to have options. I do wish they were a bit less expensive.

@cleverdevil I'm honestly surprised you haven't migrated away from Google already 😀 I made the switch from GSuite to FastMail last year like @Miraz. I couldn't be happier and if I had known how simple and issue-free the migration would be then I would have done it way sooner.

@chrispederick @cleverdevil @miraz Another vote for Fastmail here. Very easy to set up & it just works. Admittedly I set it up with a new email, without migrating anything.

@cleverdevil I only knew about it because a bunch of people here said it was great.

@chrispederick yeah, in many ways, I am surprised myself! I have been there for so long now, since the very beginning of “Google Apps for Your Domain,” and I have 10 or so domains there, with a bunch of users. It has always been the case that they wall off this portion of the service from their ad machine, which along with the fact that moving all of my email would cost hundreds of dollars per month has kept me from making the move.

Now, I am thinking of just moving my family email over, and leaving a bunch of other email on Google. That would greatly reduce the cost down to around $20/month on Fastmail, which is totally doable...

@cleverdevil Another shout-out for ProtonMail. We switched last year and they’re great.

@cleverdevil a +1 for Fastmail here as well. I’ve left all Google Services a year ago and I still exist online. Maybe even more than ever. I gladly paid a 2 year extension of our family Fastmail subscription a month ago.

@frank awesome thanks for the recommendation. It’ll likely be either Fastmail or ProtonMail for me.

@cleverdevil Several of my friends and I switched to ProtonMail about a year ago, and we’ve all been very happy with it. I use a paid account, fyi, but I started with a free one.

@grayareas I really like the idea of ProtonMail and supporting their mission. Their values are similar to mine.

@cleverdevil Yeah, thats why I settled on them. Really looking forward to them launching ProtonDrive too, likely within the next year or so.
