April usually means controlled burns, and they’re conducting these burns at a bush reserve near my place. I was afraid that the smoke would be an issue, but so far it’s been such a non-issue I was wondering if the burns were actually called off. Apparently not.

@lmika They are so carefully monitored/planned now that the public often don't even notice.

Is it a large reserve? Nice to have that so close to home.

@circustiger Yeah, I was quite impressed by the amount of notice they gave. They even put up electronic road signs nearby, which sort of prompted the expectation of a lot of smoke. Fortunately they're only doing part of the reserve — a bit of a protected grassland — and the rest of it is still open.

But yeah, the reserve is really nice. It's about 43 hectares and is pretty much all forest. It's about a 10 minute walk from my place and I walk the reserve regularly (the perimeter walk takes about an hour). There's a couple of mobs of kangaroos, plus lovely bird-life, and I've seen a few echidnas there as well. You can completely forget that you're in the suburbs when you're there.

@lmika There's becoming fewer and fewer areas like that as urban sprawl claims ever more land. I would love to see an echidna in the wild! It sounds lovely - a real soul recharge. I'd ask for photos next time you go, but let's not spoil your tranquility with such tasks. 😉

@circustiger Well that's where having a blog comes in handy. 😉 Please enjoy these two videos I posted about a year ago of an echidna I came across while walking in that reserve: here and here.
