Tried something different today, by recording a how-to video of a project I’m working on. Must say that I now appreciate the effort of those that work with video after the attempt: roughtly 20 takes and I still haven’t got a cut I like (it’s only a screencast as well).

@lmika I thought podcast production was a bear and then I tried making some small videos. Holy smokes it is brutal. There's a reason for the YouTube smash cut.

@chriskrycho Yeah, I'm guessing that this would be something that would get faster over time? Would probably take a while though. Not that I'm hoping to become a professional YouTuber or something, so it probably won't be happening to me. 😀

@lmika One of the tricks I learned is that mostly it does not have to be perfect. It is not a movie! That helps.

@chriskrycho Yes, you’re exactly right, and I think this is my problem. Classic perfect being the enemy of the good. I need to be tollerant of the odd “umm” or mistaken keystroke rather than not get it finished at all.

@lmika I sympathize, deeply. When I did New Rustacean I got very good at doing in-place re-takes. The first pre-recorded talk I did, though… not so much. If you compare that one to one I did this year you’ll see a huge difference in comfort with just keeping going (just like I would giving a talk on stage!).
