This is an excellent piece. Totally nails the Mastodon/Meta issues and provides what I’d say are the best solutions for the future that don’t risk wrecking Mastodon itself.

@craiggrannell @chipotle I agree in general.
But got to points on which I disagree:
1. Threads is a threat to mastodon because I offers an alternative product that is backed by major marketing dollars and has a low entry barrier for the Instagram userbase.
People who might have been convinced to try mastodon will use threads instead.
2. "nor will many Mastodon users be rushing to follow their friends on Threads through the Mastodon client of their choice."
People who are indifferent or uninformed about the harm caused by meta can still be genuinely nice, smart and creative people. If there will be a way to consume their content add free on mastodon I definitely will.
@jtillessen @craiggrannell I think you’re right, and I didn’t fully consider the value of following Threads users on Mastodon clients, even if Threads makes them second-class citizens. As for the other, though, I’m still a bit skeptical. You make a good case—never underestimate the power of branding!—but I genuinely think the culture difference is real, and users who click with one aren’t too likely to click with the other.
