@kevbob What's "fastmail"?

I got a proton account at one point but it was too much of a pain in the ass to transition to making it my main account. It still exists but I haven't looked at it in a couple years.

Given my extremely limited use of it, it was fine.

@kevbob Proton has been around for quite a while - I think I had set up an account more than three years ago, maybe as many as five. Sounds like ...

Oh, fuck, storm is hitting! Gotta batten down my hatches!

@kevbob and also privacyaffairs.com/protonmail-

So not like, explicitly evil but worth keeping an eye on. Because they were so known for encrypted email they were the preferred burner host for a lot of shady shit for a long time. The Cloudflare of email.

@kevbob Phew! Got mighty blowy there for a few minutes. I was afraid I was going to lose my chairs.

Anyway, Proton - I think they're a pretty stable group. I have no idea as to their union status - which it never occurred to me to think about until this Fastmail thing.

@kevbob I won’t do HEY, so Proton Mail is looking like the current frontrunner? How can that be? Remember when there used to be more of these? ::feeling ancient::

@cygnoir I am not a privacy expert but after researching privacy-oriented email providers, I tried Proton. I have been using it for a few months and am happy with it. Service has been reliable and the integration with my own domain has worked well (required a bit of setup).

@will Thanks for the recommendation. Do you have to use Proton’s app or can you use your own mail client?

@cygnoir I am also considering mailbox.org which has some good reviews from people I know. Infomaniak is the other for more heavy usage (like cloud infra and the like)

@cygnoir yes, you can use a third-party mail client with paid Proton accounts. However, this might get complex quickly as their support for multiple email aliases may require some additional configuration. I've used the PC, Android, and web-based versions and been happy so far.

I'll add that Proton's allowance for custom domains and multiple aliases has been something that I like but that is taking time to get used to.
