Life is weird.
-36 years ago, I co-founded ”Open Text, Systems Inc”; today just "OpenText", an enterprise software roll-up, lots of M&A of OK-but-declining companies. I've had no involvement this century.
-I see they've acquired Micro Focus, famous as the leading modern supplier of COBOL technology. Yay COBOL?
-IBM sued Micro Focus over something in their “modernization for IBM mainframe PL/I and COBOL development” product. Boo IBM?
-Judge threw the case out. Yay judge?

@timbray The only COBOL I ever wrote was 4 lines of Micro Focus PC COBOL to make an Int 21 call to get the Netware IPX address of the network card in the Intel 386 PC.

1989 was a weird year.

@timbray Miscro Focus also bought the Autonomy search and cm stuff, after the HP debacle. They have a fair number of customers going down with the ship.

@timbray Small world. The acquisition of MF meant my partner was RIF’d by MF, and she landed elsewhere and has been much happier!

@timbray And I work now for SUSE, which used to be owned by MicroFocus. Number of changes in ownership in these companies is mind-blowing.

@EricCarroll A lot of important stuff was written in PL/1. It was the language The Smart People always wanted to use.

@jwildeboer @timbray Ahh - something to learn. a) I had put mentally the technopark to Vaterstetten, not Grasbrun.
b) I still can remember the IXOS signs on that building ...
