@martinfeld I have an almost identical setup. I have the same iPad stand (bought after I heard about it from Jason Snell), the same Trackpad that I disassociated from my iMac, I recently upgraded to the Logitech MX3 mouse, and I use a 2017 10.5” iPad with keyboard case. Brothers in arms!

@canion Oh cool! Good taste, you have. I’m a big fan of the Logi(tech) mice. They’re nice to hold and the buttons have a satisfying click. When you eventually get a different iPad, which size do you think that you’ll get?

@martinfeld I’ve been going through this thought experiment recently. 6 months ago I switched to an iMac from a MacBook Pro. I don’t think I want to get another laptop for the foreseeable future - although again - if I were, I couldn’t choose between the Air and the (new) 13” Pro. So if I make the iPad the centre of my mobile computing, I’ve been thinking about configurations. When I bought this one, I almost chose the 12.9”, but didn’t. I have always bought cellular versions as well.

Now, looking to the next upgrade cycle I’m really tempted to get the 12.9” WiFi only. But keep that as my “home” laptop and keep this current 10.5” in service as the out-of-office option as it has cellular.

The thing that puts me off is the upgrade cost though - specifically the keyboard. It would be really cool to get the new iPad Keyboard, but man that thing is >$500! And if I get the 12.0” it’s more expensive.

So I am in this quandary where I don’t know what to do. And really, I don’t need to do anything because apart from a battery that isn’t as good as it was, this 10.5” is just fine.

@canion I completely understand everything that you wrote. My first Mac was a laptop and I loved it... but then I switched to having a desktop and the iPad became my portable computer. I really enjoy that mix.

From what you’ve said and based on the fact that we have the same iPad, it makes sense to enjoy the 10.5 for what it is and get whatever is next. The new keyboard is tantalising but yes, in Australia, it’s essentially like a second mortgage.

@martinfeld If advancements in technology don't yield more choice and flexability, what's the point!? In an era where speeds and feeds no longer matter, choice is all we have!

@Burk You're totally right: flexibility is the big one. It's a bit cheesy but I do like that phrase about the iPad being a 'naked robotic core' that can be transformed easily into different things. If you had to choose one point that you love most about your new iPad set-up, what would it be? 🤔

@martinfeld

My iPad can be: a Tablet, a Laptop, an eReader, a Digital Canvas.

My MacBook can be: a Laptop.
