Keep Practising: S01, E02. In this time of COVID-19 quarantines, I consider the value of social media platforms to my life.

@canion another excellent podcast! I dumped Twitter not that long ago, and I haven’t deactivated Facebook, but I don’t use it at all.

@sarcassem Thanks! It was fun figuring out how to add in the music elements. I’m also discovering how much I say “um” and I know exactly how it looks in a waveform now. Lots of snipping needed.

@canion I really enjoyed this! A few things...

I totally agree with what you said about not being able to watch much television; I feel busier too.

I loved your description of social media as a 'cesspit'—very accurate—and also your defence of ABC and SBS.

When you were talking about what you like about Micro.blog, do you think that it could grow and retain its community feel? Do you think that the tools and 'restrictions' (i.e. no likes or retweets) can keep it going?

@martinfeld My biggest worry for micro.blog is that it seems like growth has slowed - I haven't seen too many new users recently. I think it is finding a place as a blog host and aggregator; but not so much as a social network. That means the social tools of liking, etc. aren't so important - but I think Discovery becomes more vital. I want to find the interesting voices on the network - and that is the challenge.

@canion Thanks, you've put it very well. I also wondered what you meant when you downplayed the social-network aspect in your episode but this has certainly clarified it. The blogging part is the focus. Is there a certain type of user or set of viewpoints/backgrounds that you think could particularly benefit this site? There's certainly a tech bias here but what do you think could enrich it?

@martinfeld We need less US-centricity (not easy), more gender diversity (doable?), and less tech enthusiasts (unlikely). I'd love to hear about what life is like in other regions that are less well known. Funny that even the UK doesn’t seem to pop up much.

@canion Agree, agree, agree... also, you’re right about the UK. Very strange!

@canion I'm for slow steady growth. Hopefully that is happening for micro.blog and will continue.
