Iā€™ve been reassessing my note-taking apps again - thatā€™s something that happens on a too-regular basis. NotePlan had been good, but Iā€™m not keen on the v3 upgrade pricing. DEVONthink has shown it can work like NotePlan too. The answer is always DEVONthink. @jack @twelvety

@canion @jack I still love DEVONthink but in practice it falls into my ā€œneglected toolsā€ category. I donā€™t know why, but I only end up using it a handful of times every year. I have a hard time making it routine, although there is still no better place for me to stash PDFs of articles that I want to hang onto forever (when I remember to do that). Is v3 of DT more nimble than earlier versions and thus better at notetaking for you?

@twelvety @canion I go in and out of DEVONthink, but it never goes away. Mostly it's my "file cabinet" for receipts, software licenses, financial records, etc. I also use it to house all of the web pages I "clip" from. Currently, I'm also keeping all project-related (PARA) files there. Notes go in Roam, files go in DTP. v3 is a huge upgrade.

@twelvety @jack V3 is a lot better. Iā€™ve got it setup to automatically create a daily note. I edit in Markdown and it has a side by side rendered preview. I can also use wiki links within the markdown note for reference to others notes and reference files. Essentially replicating what NotePlan offers (except calendar integration).

@canion How do you automatically create a daily note and what do you put in it?

I live in DEVONthink but I find its markdown support so alien to how I work that lately Iā€™m just using rich text. Which will get me excommunicated by productivity nerds!

@MitchWagner I received guidance on how to create a new file from this post at the DT forum. Itā€™s starts as a blank file which I use as a bullet journal for anything that happens or I might need to remember about the day. Predominantly work notes. I leave the file open in a separate window so itā€™s always quickly available.

As for rich text, it does have some benefits but Iā€™m finicky about visual consistency and I end up futzing too much with styles, etc. ensuring perfect consistency with rich text.

@canion I feel like youā€™re passively aggressively judging my ā€œput it all in Drafts and pray you can find it laterā€ strategy

@canion That's a good tip. I installed the script and it worked like a champ. I'm trying it out today.

I already journal throughout the day in Day One, but that feels PERMANENT. Seems like it might be useful to have a place to put notes that are more day-to-day.
