Finished reading: Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse Book 1) by James S. A. Corey 📚

Enjoyed this space opera. Poignant, hopeful, and a little gruesome. Great characters. Wish the women could be more than sidekicks or love interests. Maybe we’ll get that further in the series.

@Annie Ah man, I find it so annoying when I read a book that seems otherwise good (or at least to have some good ideas) but the characterisation of the women is... like that. It's like... your imagination couldn't extend that far, huh. Since you say it's otherwise enjoyable, I hope that aspect does improve 🤞

@Annie Have you tried The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell? It's straight-up military scifi, but the women aren't always sidekicks.

@Annie have you read Ancillary Justice? The women are definitely not sidekicks or romantic interests. Sometimes they’re spaceships.

@Annie The series changes quite a bit and ended up being one of my favorite sci-fi series. Women definitely play central, powerful roles as the series matures. That said, I’m a man and the series is written by two men so view here will definitely have a systemic bias. What I loved about it most is how it handles chosen family stories in complex ways. Plus the characters were really endearing. Won’t lie, cried at the very end lol.

@JohnAN @josephaleo Haven’t read either of these but both sound intriguing. Adding to the list!

@jayeless Yep, same. It’s just a bummer and there are so many opportunities (especially in sci-fi!) to make women as central as men. That said, I like this book enough to keep reading the series.
