@Alligator it just encloses and protects the PCB and battery and makes typing on the keyboard feel more solid and stable. I use the keyboard for all work on a computer now.
@bsag Okay, you have my attention now. After watching a few videos on alternative keyboards, I'm wondering if I shouldn't try them out? What do you recommend for a ~30 year Qwerty typist?

@Alligator I am still using a custom split every day, but now I use TOTEM keyboards (wireless and wired) that I made myself. You can read the details in those posts, but I found the cognitive load of dealing with only 18 keys a bit much in the end.
@bsag Interesting! I made the decision last night to try an Aurora Sweep. Now I just need to find the best keycaps. I’m looking forward to using a split keyboard!
@bsag I still struggle a bit with the cognitive load of my Planck, I cannot imagine going much lower
