WashPo: Why Everyone’s Tweeting About the Mastodon in the Room
It needs to be said: Mastodon is not the next Twitter. And that’s OK. It’s not supposed to be.

@futuregeek I have an account for messing around with (basically want to see how many of the people I follow on Twitter I can move to Mastodon).
I set up an account ages ago but ended up only using it for a short time (because, iirc, Micro.blog arrived). When I went back to it last week the server notified me that it was shutting down (so needed to migrate) and then my iOS client (Amaroq) crashed!
@the Ok. Interesting.
I am mulling it over…considering it. I love that I can self host it! But ultimately I am souring on and moving away from using social media so I am not keen on adding another social network. I have deleted all but one of my Twitter accounts and don’t check it regularly now.
Good to have a decentralized/federated option though. I think I am going to focus on blogging and RSS, and email if I need to get in touch with someone/company/developer etc
@futuregeek That’s a more mature response. (Mine is more like, “Oooohhh — something shiny!”)
I agree with you generally about social media (except Manton’s little corner of Utopia here, of course) but too many organizations & thoughtful commentators rely solely on Twitter or Facebook. I’d rather they had something more bloglike with an RSS feed but apparently I lack sufficient influence …
@the Good point. I also am slightly drawn to Mastodon as a new thing but am resisting the urge.
I honestly don't miss Twitter so far. But I do follow some Twitter accounts in my RSS reader. Do you do that?
I also have been using Nitter if I want to see what a certain user has been posted recently, checking for app/product updates etc.
Which organizations and thoughtful commentators that you like are only available on Twitter?
Also forgot to mention that it's cool that we can follow Mastodon users in Micro.blog!
@futuregeek @the In a somewhat similar conversation (see comments on post), I came around to simply directing Mastodon users to the "Mastodon compatible username" on Micro.blog. They can follow me in the way they're used to on Mastodon. And I can stay on Micro.blog and follow them. Replies are seen in both places. Solves the problem of having too many social media accounts for me.
@the Could you maybe search for my mastodon page → @futuregeek on Mastodon and tell me what you see? Can you see my posts and follow me?
@futuregeek @the Not trying to hijack the request, but saw it and thought I could help. I’ll attach what I see. Posts won’t show until someone follows you. At that point, only the posts created after that point show.
@Mtt Ok. That’s very helpful. Good to know. I saw that page too and wondered why no posts show up. That explains it. Thanks!
